ON THE RIVER
Brokenhead River Ecological Reserve
Brokenhead River Ecological Reserve protects rare river-bottom forest. The forest is a mature mixed wood forest near its climax condition. Due to agricultural development in southern Manitoba, intact mature river-bottom forest is rare in the province. This ecological reserve represents the last stand of mature mixed forest along the Brokenhead River.

IN THE WATERSHED

Brokenhead Wetland Ecological Reserve
The Brokenhead Wetland Ecological Reserve consists of several different wetland habitats. The habitats include relatively dry black spruce stands and Sphagnum patches, wet swamp, forested fingers, spring fed forest stands composed of eastern white cedar, black spruce, and tamarack, saturated spring-fed channels, as well as fens, strings, and flanks dominated by a variety of graminoid species. The ecological diversity of the complex makes it unique in Manitoba.

Cedar Bog Ecological Reserve
Cedar Bog Ecological Reserve is the last remnant of what was once a very large cedar bog, and is the last opportunity to protect a representative area of cedar bog which is still relatively intact. In addition, the ecological reserve represents an uncommon mature ecosystem with a biodiversity adapted to specific environmental conditions associated with cedar bogs.

Lewis Bog Ecological Reserve
Lewis Bog Ecological Reserve is an excellent example of the diversity of wetlands that can be found in the southeastern Manitoba area. This diversity includes shallow water open areas that support grasses, sedges and reeds and higher peat islands supporting Black Spruce and Tamarack.

Mars Hills Wildlife Management Area
Mars Hills Wildlife Management Area is largely aspen and jack pine stands with a few spruce and balsam fir. Bogs dot the lowlands. In open meadows there are wildflowers blooming from spring to fall, including some rare tallgrass prairie species.

John T. Williams Wildlife Management Area
John T. Williams Wildlife Management Area, formerly known as Thalberg Bush, is an island surrounded by agriculture. Nestled in the aspen, spruce and tamarack forests you will find grouse, deer, black bear and the occasional moose. The WMA protects an important breeding and migration corridor for northern forest owls such as the great gray owl. It also provides significant habitat for neo-tropical birds.
